“El Cobre” S.S Doris

History

S.S. Doris, an Italian steamship of 3979 tons, 340 feet (104 m) long, 45 feet wide, and 19 feet high. It was apparently transporting barrels of fuel (gasoline) for Italian submarines. During the Glasgow-Genoa route, it was spotted and torpedoed off the Spanish coast on October 13, 1917, by the German submarine U35, which was patrolling the area. The attack hit the bow, causing an explosion when it struck the gasoline storage area, far from heat sources such as boilers. It sank 4 hours later due to the ensuing fire.

The dive

Sunk near El Carbonero by the same German U-boat. It is located upside down on a sandy bottom at a depth of 49 meters, about 5 miles from Puerto Tomás Maestre. The wreck is known as “El Cobre.” Some divers claim to have seen drops of hydrocarbons rising to the surface from the ship, possibly a consequence of corrosion in the gasoline barrels that may have remained intact.
