The waters of Cabo de Palos were declared a Marine Reserve in 1995 due to the exceptional beauty and conservation of its seabed. Its excellent state of conservation has favored a very broad biological diversity, formed by extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica and coralligenous formations on the underwater mountains that descend to more than 40 meters deep. The Hormigas Islands area, in addition to possessing an undeniable ecological and cultural value, is a recognized diving destination and a European reference in marine research.
