Frequently Asked Questions about the Open Water Diver Course

Do I Need Previous Experience?

No. It is not necessary to have dived before.

Even so, having some prior contact with the sea (such as a baptism dive or snorkeling experience) can help you feel more comfortable during the first practices.

Junior Open Water Diver: from 10 years old. However, we recommend doing it from 12 years old, always under the supervision of an instructor.

Open Water Diver (adults): from 16 years old, being able to dive autonomously together with another certified diver.

There is no maximum age limit, but it is necessary to have an adequate physical condition to dive safely.

Diving is an accessible activity for most people, but it requires good general health and a basic physical condition. Before confirming your reservation, you must complete an online medical declaration, which functions as a personal assessment tool:

👉 See medical questionnaire

If you answer “yes” to any question, it does not mean that you cannot participate, but you will need a medical authorization issued by a health professional to guarantee your safety.

At Planeta Azul the course is usually done in 3 days:

  • Day 1: Theoretical-practical class on equipment assembly, resolution of doubts and first dive.
  • Days 2 and 3: Two dives each day to complete the training in open water.

Includes everything you need to train as a diver:

  • Online theory to prepare the practical part.
  • 5 open sea dives to apply the skills learned.
  • All diving equipment during the duration of the course.
  • Diving insurance throughout the course.
  • International Open Water Diver certification, once all the required skills and knowledge have been passed.

The depth varies as the days progress and according to the student’s progression. It starts with shallow dives, in a place where you can stand, and progresses gradually up to a maximum of 18 meters. This allows you to learn safely and gain confidence underwater.

You will be a certified Open Water Diver, being able to dive autonomously with another certified diver up to 18 meters, anywhere in the world.
The certification does not expire, but if you spend more than six months without diving, it is recommended to do a refresher session to reinforce skills, regain confidence and maintain safety underwater.

Yes. Many divers use contact lenses without any problem. Prescription masks can also be used, depending on availability.

The instructors are trained to help you. They will teach you how to control buoyancy and handle uncomfortable situations so you feel safe and relaxed.

The course dives take place in different coves of Cabo de Palos, outside the marine reserve (since it can only be accessed with a qualification).
The specific cove is chosen according to sea conditions, always prioritizing safety and a suitable environment for learning.

The training is carried out with small groups to guarantee personalized teaching and maximum safety.

The number of instructors varies depending on the number of students, to ensure adequate attention to each participant.

Normally, in the first dives the ratio is 1 instructor for every 3 students.

Ideally, it should be done consecutively, but you can complete it in two weekends if it is more convenient for you.

If for any reason you could not finish it, the pending sessions will be rescheduled for another time that suits your availability.

You cannot fly immediately after diving.

You must wait between 12 and 24 hours, depending on the number of dives and how many consecutive days you have been diving.
